If the lesson is with a beginning student I work mostly on technique and when I feel the student is ready we move on to repertoire. While I continue to pursue my MM degree from the Manhattan School of Music, I work with Grammy Award winning artists and ensembles, such as Ryan Truesdell's Gil Evans Project and Trio Globo, and perform frequently with jazz, rock, funk, and pop groups of my own and of my peers. I set realistic goals for my students at each lesson. I like to demonstrate how to play- usually I count while the student plays, which helps with the beats. We may sing together or separate the note names or the song words. Every music phase requires different input. Students who struggle with note reading, get additional note reading and writing books. I always begin with an interview to get a feel for the student’s level and interest. I start out with basics; musical alphabet, finding keys in the piano, finger numbers, listening. The method books I prefer are the Music Tree series, the Schaum series, Bastien notecards and i have recently began looking into Piano Pronto.
