I was an educator in the Seneca Falls Central Schools for 38 years where I first became an instrumental music teacher. At the first lesson is just seeing where they are and what kind of music they would want to play(hymnal songs, gospel songs, soundtracks, opera, classical etc). Then at the beginning of each lesson would be theory(note recognition, counting, fingering etc). Then review on what they practiced for the week and if they are confident with the pieces add a few more songs. I use a variety of methods, custom-fit for each student individually. I teach Classical and church piano, along with sightreading, ear training, performance techniques, music theory, and other techniques specially designed to give my students the most well-rounded learning experience possible. I tend to prefer Piano Adventures for younger students and teens, and incorporate use of the corresponding app whenever possible. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. We gradually increase the tempo over the next several weeks. Pieces like that will be rehearsed at the end of each lesson after working through a few passages in Alfreds book. At the beginning, I ask my adults what music theyre interested in learning.
