At the first lesson is just seeing where they are and what kind of music they would want to play(hymnal songs, gospel songs, soundtracks, opera, classical etc). Then at the beginning of each lesson would be theory(note recognition, counting, fingering etc). Then review on what they practiced for the week and if they are confident with the pieces add a few more songs. Technique is tremendously important in order to execute the music. Classical music is the fundamental and first step a student needs to take in order to learn and perform music properly.
