I have been an band and orchestra director for several decades and was director of  the brooklyn college big band for 4 years as a grad student.I am quite familiar with concert band,  jazz orchestra & symphonic as well as pop music repertoire .  I have a background of 8 years in percussion ensembles as well as having studied afro cuban, caribbean and indian music. Setting goals is one of the first topics I discuss with my students, and then indicate some of the steps they need to take to achieve the goals that they set for themselves. For beginning students, I typically start with the Suzuki Method while combining it with the Essential Elements Method. As the student learns the fundamentals I gradually add scales and exercises to further develop the student's technique. After further progress, I begin to introduce solo repertoire and add other pieces. I'm fairly flexible on what pieces the student may play in the lessons, as long as the rudiments and classic repertoire are covered. Read More

I believe that I have a natural talent for teaching. I was able to solve varied problems or my students. Whether it is stiff hands, bad hand position habits, inability to play polyrhythms, articulation issues, phrasing and ornaments or a general frustration at being unable to control the sound, I have demonstrated time and time again that these problems are not insurmountable. I encourage, when applicable, parent participation, their help and support but if these positives are missing, I found a way to redeem the situation and that resulted in tremendous self-esteem boost of my piano pupils.
