For my beginning students, I typically start with either Essential Elements 2000 for strings or Sound Innovations. Both books give younger students a grasp on the fundamentals of technique. As they grow I then introduce solo repertoire by using the Suzuki Books but also like to add a fiddle book. Sometimes students gradually go either to fiddle or to classical. My philosophy is that everyone is musical to some degree and that anyone can be taught to play music. Not everyone can be taught the same way, however, and it takes a highly skilled, creative, intuitive and patient teacher to do that. There's so much more to it than memorizing the piece and being able to play or sing it on a technical level.
