If a student loves playing by ear, we seek knowledge of composition more, if they are inspired to play Star Wars, we add that to the repertoire. I have been playing the piano for 26 years and have learned many different styles, from classical to jazz to improv playing in different bands across the U.S. I graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with a Piano Performance minor. For beginner Piano students who are young, I teach either from Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Faber & Faber. Both are great interactive resources that help guide toward mastery of the basics. I also like to include games using flash cards and note names for my youngest students who learn best through a variety of activities. I started taking piano lessons when I was eight years old, and continued lessons through high school and for a few semesters in college. I studied music at a high level simply because I couldn't justify studying anything else, because nothing else has mattered more to me.
