 Music is a very physical thing as well as a very abstract thing.  In my lessons, there will be kennistetic learning through movement as well as teaching through sensation. Using tools like Solfege it helps create muscle memory and tuning. Piano students will learn a wealth of theory knowledge, correct posture and fingering patterns. I will also encourage singing in my piano lessons to reaffirm the student's aural skills. The Alexander Technique is also something that my students will explore in our lessons. Read More

At the beginning I will test the students on how much they know and what they like to play(soundtracks, gospel songs, songs out of the hymnal, classical etc). I start every lesson with positive and a little bit of chit chat to see how everything in their life is going. For me, it is easier for me to hear a rhythm or melody while looking at it. It is easier for me to grasp and understand the rhythm and melody in terms of the context of the piece. Same with my teaching. I will always demonstrate a scale or rhythm or chord for a student before having the student attempt it by themselves. After we work through the example together, I will have them try playing it alone and if a particular area needs to be fixed I will address it, make sure the student understands, and move on from there. I will also introduce music theory along with helping students to develop a ear for music, so that they can mix the two together to create their own style of playing. At the beginning of our time, I like to set goals with my students. As we progress, we revisit these goals to make sure were on track and to see if any of the goals have changed. Students should always learn at their own pace, not mine, so I dont like to be too strict with these goals and progressions. Its all about having fun and learning a new skill! Read More
