Once these students have grasped the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce repertoire appropriate for their first solo recital. It all started when I took my first drum lesson in the 4th grade. From then on, I wanted to play whenever I could. I played in all my school bands from middle school to high school. Graduated Southern University, home of the world famous "Human Jukebox" which I was a member of for 3 years, as well as playing for my church since I was 13. Along the way I have had the honor of meeting and learning from respected musicians such as Lawrence Jackson (former director of SU Bands), Herman Jackson (Brother of Randy Jackson), Jerry Lee Lane (Marching percussion pioneer) and countless others. For brass instrumental students, I generally use the Rubank Method books, focusing on care of the instrument and basic fundamentals. For piano students I use a variety of different method books and am not tied down to any one series. We will also work on scales and the Hannon series For vocal students, I use a series of vocalises, scales and other exercises to strengthen the voice. For teens and adult beginners (age 11 and up), I use the books specially complied for older beginners then progress to level three or above. I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun for the appropriate level(s). I like Mayron Cole piano method because it provide solid progression for rhythm counting, systematic build up for sight reading as well as introducing key concepts in music theory/history/genre.
