Instruments: Piano Voice

My aim is to guide students to be independent musicians, therefore lessons include vocal technique, breathing and vocal production, reading music, music theory, how to learn a piece of music effectively and efficiently. I suggest repertoire based on a student's previous experience, if any, or relate repertoire to their life experience, if appropriate. Young children often start with folk songs or rhymes, more experienced students move on to more complicated repertoire. Read More

My goal is to teach my students to be musicians, and for them to walk away every week with a deeper appreciation for music. I believe in nurturing all my students' creativity while challenging their skills to help them achieve their goals. I continuously acknowledge their achievements, but will remind them of what needs improvement. My students are given multiple opportunities to perform as a soloist or as part of a small ensemble in recitals throughout the year. Read More

For beginners I typically start with the Bastien or Faber Method and as their level increases I always assign pieces outside of the piano method which are generally performed at their first recital. Adults are also welcome to participate and I have them work on at least 2 contrasting pieces based on skills they may need to work on as well as something they love and enjoy learning. I do give basics importance (scales, arpeggios, etc) as I believe this greatly improves a student's understanding and helps them reach a much higher level in the repertoire they are working on. My methods of choice for instruction are many due to the amount of instruments that I teach and the many levels of mastery within each concentration. For most woodwinds I begin with the Rubank family of methods and duet books. I favor many of the Berklee press books for music theory, voice, keyboards, genre studies, guitar, bass, composition, ear training, harmony and arranging. The Schirmer library of classical piano pieces is often used. Read More

for younger students, we usually work through a book together to understand the fundamentals of music before we start to approach more complex lessons. I tend to use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements as well as other series' depending on the student's level and musical interest. For adult lessons, I typically create a unique lesson plan that includes warmups, technique exercises, and the learning of songs or solos all dependent on that student's particular interests. As a teacher, my experience started mainly during my college days. I taught a wide variety of ages starting at 6 years old all the way to 17 year olds. I really started teaching in earnest during the summer of 2012 where I took a job in Michigan as a Piano Teacher Camp Counselor. I taught over 50 kids of all different ages and skill levels improving vastly on the teaching methods I'd already developed. Read More

For beginning students I prefer to use either Alfred's, Mel Bay, or Hal Leonard method books. I generally stay away from method books that use guitar tablature because I find that student will prefer to read the tablature instead of standard musical notation. Tablature is a good way to easily show how guitar parts are played, but is not useful when teaching standard notation, music theory, harmony, etc. In addition to using a method book, I will also teach the student popular songs, which is a great way to start teaching chords and song structure in addition to keeping the lesson fun and the student engaged. Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
