How much time goes in to each category will depend on the student. For beginning students, I first focus on helping them understand their range (i.e. bass, tenor, alto, soprano) and important fundamentals of singing (i.e. loose jaw, full use of our body as support for our voice, relaxed tongue, proper breath support with the diaphragm, expansion of the ribs, proper body posture, etc). I started teaching private lessons in college, about four or five years ago. I have taken students on several different instruments, mainly saxophone, piano and guitar. I find that it is important to encourage students to play and practice the type of music they enjoy, and to have fun performing and learning. Method books are a great structured way to quickly get confident on an instrument, however they don't often encourage listening skills or creativity.
