What keeps one interested in playing music, in the long term, is the ability to realize melodies one hears in one's head. In my experience, this is the most joyous aspect of one's musical practice, and is the underlying goal in my teaching strategy. Some aspects of one's practice, like repertoire, are geared towards performing for other people. While I think it is important for all students to achieve our weekly goals and progress regularly, I also try to cultivate an extremely positive environment so that you will leave each lesson feeling encouraged to continue enjoying your music as you work to improve. I have used several different method books for beginners, but I tend to like the Faber edition. After about the second or third book I incorporate classical music pieces into the lesson. For adults I have had success with Piano Partners, which uses a different style of showing patterns and teaching improv to get the student playing much faster than traditional methods. Read More

I started teaching private piano in 1991 and have trained over 200 private students since starting. I have taught K-12 music in public schools since 1991. My students' ages have ranged from 3 to 66+. As I am fully retired from the public school music classroom, I have expanded my times available for private students - piano, keyboard, ukulele, guitar, and all brass instruments are welcome. My curriculum spans many styles of music, based on the needs and desires of the student, but also preparing the student for musicianship in any situation. Read More
