I want new students to have fun and learn things that are interesting to them and benefitial to their musical journey. Children should get their beginnings in technique books and eventually music that stimulates further growth and interest; and adults, like the kids, importance is placed on technique, but even moreso, good practice techniques! As adults we quickly lose patience and revert to bad habits when it comes to practice, and that slows growth, develops poor technique and narrows our abilities to only what we currently know. I like to focus on songs that students are interested in. I also recommend certain books to be used as supplementary learning. For children guitarists I recommend Alfred's Kid's Guitar Course. For older guitarists I recommend Hal Leonard's Guitar Method. For children pianists I recommend Faber Piano Adventures. Read More

I have used several different method books for beginners, but I tend to like the Faber edition. After about the second or third book I incorporate classical music pieces into the lesson. For adults I have had success with Piano Partners, which uses a different style of showing patterns and teaching improv to get the student playing much faster than traditional methods. Read More

I love the many facets of music. My love of music, and my best practice, stems from a deep enjoyment of listening to music, as a consumer of sound. Developing my listening ear has been the most useful tool in all my years as a performer. I've played with academic ensembles in a choral setting, and done significant work in small ensemble classical guitar groupings. My most enjoyable long term academic ensemble, however, was the African Hand Percussion Ensemble, as while it had a very strict underlying structure for the cohesion of the group, it was deeply improvisational in nature, my favorite aspect of musical performance. Instruments: Piano Voice

I make sure to first introduce my students musical fundamentals, then progress to repertoire that is appropriate for the students' age and skill level. I scaffold learning concepts and sequence them so that students can confidently progress from one level to another. Music theory is woven into my teaching methods, strengthening students' understanding of their instrument. For piano, I like to teach from the Faber Piano Adventures books. For voice, I implement vocal exercises that can be easily replicated and practiced. Read More

I work closely with students, parents and other teachers to ensure that each lesson is tailored to meet specific needs of the student. I understand that everyone has different learning capabilities and finding all of the different ways to teach my students is part of the fun in teaching. Everyone learns at their own pace and with so many more genres of music than ever before, people are developing different tastes in music as well. Read More
