Instruments:

I am a well-rounded musician with experience teaching private and group lessons. I am a hard-working and driven individual. I am friendly and get along easily with people. In 2011, I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance-Instrumental (flute) and in 2013 I graduated with a Master's degree in Music Education, both from Pensacola Christian College. I was involved in the Pensacola Christian College Symohony  (PCCymphony) for 5 years and held the position of Principal Flute for 2 years. I played in the PCC band for 6 years. I was also involved in the Woodwind Ensemble. I have played the flute for 16 years and the piccolo for 10 years. I played in Rejoice Orchestra for Campus Church at Pensacola Christian College for the televised broadcast of Rejoice TV and was a session player for Rejoice in the Lord recording studio. I also have the experience of putting together my own recitals.

I am a firm believer in following the student at the beginning level. I take time to get to know a student's motivation, interest, and needs. Meeting them where they are and leading them from that point includes the use of published lesson books, my own materials, and games for on and off the keyboard. Each lesson includes a review, introduction to something new, theory practice, and a game.

Since teaching my first piano lessons 10 years ago I realize that, as a teacher, you never stop learning.  There can always be better ways to do things.  I believe that a holistic view of teaching provides a full spectrum of knowledge to my students; this includes theory, improvisation, and popular tunes (in addition to sight reading and technique).  I try to increase motivation to play the piano by asking them what their favorite songs are and then finding a way to arrange them to their level.

Making goals that are challenging, but realistic is the best way to grow!  I want to help students wrap their heads around how the musical world works and their instruments, and I want to do it effectively and efficiently.  Building good practice techniques is a must.  Once we have an understanding that the fun comes with hard work and patient progress, the longing for an "over-night mastery" won't be as strong.  Enjoying every step of the way makes music what it is!

I began practicing music without a theoretical background, on piano, at age 8. My first exposure to music theory was in college. The written basis for the logic I'd already been hearing enraptured me. Then as now, an increase in my understanding of music theory equates directly to a practical application on multiple instruments. I believe this correlation between theory and idiomatic technique is the bedrock of any long term practice, serious or amateur. In my experience with academic ensembles, the fluidity a common vocabulary brings to a practice and performance scenario is invaluable for the cohesion of individual performers within their unit.
