I believe that performance is theessence and ultimate expression ofmusic and I impart this idea toother aspiring musicians through my lessons. Intrinsic to this process is the application of emotionand the use of dynamicswhich ultimately is the ebb and flow of music and the core of what draws others into ones musical world. This process, along with proper warm-ups, practice, developing good study habits and personal dedication is what I want every student to learn. Read More

I ask all of my students to be prepared for their lessons with a notebook and pencil for lesson notes and assignments. I ask them to bring any materials they have and will often recommend books and supplemental material I have had success with. I believe in writing down notes that help students understand what they are learning, exactly what students should practice, and setting goals for their practice and overall progress. Read More

My teaching experience goes all the way back to when I was in high school. I was teaching my peers outside of school, giving them lessons, helping them with music theory, etc., and I have helped more than one of them go on to music school with me. Ive been teaching guitar lessons on their own for 10 years, starting by teaching beginners and working my way up to more advanced teaching about 5 years ago. Read More

For beginning students I typicaly start with a introduction book like Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Book 1 for younger students, and Solo Guitar Playing book 1 by Fredrick Noad for older and experienced students. Once fundamental techniques are acquired, I introduce repertoire suited for each student and they can participate in a performance. For older students I will work on the music they are interested in and integrate challenging material accordingly to keep lessons engaging and fun. Read More

I love the many facets of music. My love of music, and my best practice, stems from a deep enjoyment of listening to music, as a consumer of sound. Developing my listening ear has been the most useful tool in all my years as a performer. I've played with academic ensembles in a choral setting, and done significant work in small ensemble classical guitar groupings. My most enjoyable long term academic ensemble, however, was the African Hand Percussion Ensemble, as while it had a very strict underlying structure for the cohesion of the group, it was deeply improvisational in nature, my favorite aspect of musical performance.
