Instruments: Piano Voice Flute
I began teaching during my undergraduate studies, initially starting out as a double major in performance and education. In a short time, I realized how deeply I loved working one on one with students, which led me to pursue performance full time and teach in my private studio. Once I moved to California, I began expanding my teaching to music schools (Yamaha) and have continued to work with students in a diverse array of settings (private studio, music schools, high schools, university). For the beginning student, I typically suggest a collection of specific studies from an array of sources, some designed simply for technique and others for the development of musical understanding. Naturally, these depend on the individual and their needs. I am most dedicated to facilitating the needs of each individual student and providing them the ability to express their musical ideas clearly and easily. For more advanced students, I will focus on honing technical proficiency and challenging them with new repertoire, preparing them for new musical opportunities, such as youth orchestras, chamber music, recitals, and competitions to further their growth. For beginner students, I often begin with the foundations of the instrument. For drums, we would be practice the rhythmic subdivisions (quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes) and slowly work them into grooves that they can easily start to pick out of their favorite songs. When the fundamentals have been established, we can learn more advanced grooves, dissect songs together, and learn how to improvise and write our own drum parts. My biggest focus as a teacher is to help the student discover the music that they want to learn and make so that they can develop their own unique voice. Read More

When I teach beginning students who are children, I start with the Bastien Piano Basics or Alfred Basic Piano. This way, I make sure that my students learn and understand the fundamentals and basics of piano and music. After they learn from several levels of these method books, I introduce easy pieces by classical composers from Easy Piano Classics by Bastien or Easy Piano Classics edited by Agay, followed by Sonatinas by Clementi, Kuhnau, Haydn, and Mozart. Instruments: Piano Saxophone Flute Clarinet
I vary my methods according to student level, age, and practice habits. For example, for the advanced high school student I often mold my teachings around college audition requirements and all-state, regional band auditions. Otherwise, particularly for younger styudents, I am not very performance oriented. I think it is more important to learn to "play" at music rather than plan and prepare for multiple recitals. When I start with beginner students I don't go to their books right away. I like to sit with my students and have them learn about the parts of the instrument as well as getting to know their instrument. We first learn about embouchure and just get a sound out on their mouth piece. Later on Iuse Neil A. Kjos Music Company Standard of Excellence Books. I really enjoy using these books with beginners because it gets them started on simple notes and rhythm patterns. Read More

I'm an award-winning singer and songwriter, but I LOVE to teach! My passion, more than anything else, is making sure that music is enjoyable and students gain a sense of confidence on their instrument. I do this by building strong, supportive relationships with my students and tailoring my teaching to help them achieve their goals, whether that's becoming a superstar "shower singer" or a professional gigging musician. My instruments are piano, voice, and guitar, but I also teach songwriting, music theory, and basic music production. Read More
