My training in piano started from when I was 5 years old. Since then, I continuously took piano lesson and have had performed on the stage as well. I continued my training in piano at the University of Hartford under David Westfall, Paul Rutman, Susan Cheng and Grace Smith. From Manhattan School of Music, I studied composition/theory with Richard Danielpour and Reiko Fueting, and piano with Lisa Yui. For beginner students, I will usually start with the basic fundamentals of playing the instrument. This would include tone production, articulation, flexibility, scales, arpeggios, and sight reading. Once the student has become more fluent in the technique of their instrument I will start to ask them what they want to work on and improve upon. I am experienced professional mallet percussionist and bandleader with an emphasis on jazz and improvisation. In 2013, I was the first jazz vibraphonist be accepted in to The Juilliard School where I had the opportunity to mentor classical percussionists on how to improvise. It's very digestible, and gives a good starting-off point for both technical playing, and larger musical concepts as a whole. With a student who is older or perhaps more advanced, who has a solid grasp on technical proficiency and music theory, I would typically recommend studying specific pieces, starting with Classical, and eventually moving into Jazz.
