I involve a lot of kinesthetic movement based lessons along with visual and aural aids. I get to know the type of learner my student is and then plan my instruction to fit their learning style. My favorite thing about teaching is that no two students are the same; and no two lessons with the same student are either! It is so important to establish a goal for a student to work towards, so that they know what they're practicing for. Not huge goals either that are months away, but goals that can be accomplished between each lesson. I approach students needs on an individual basis. Aside from establishing a general grounding in technique and structure, I tend to be rather open to the student's desire and potential for finding their own"voice" (though some exception is made for the Classical tradition of period/genre related style performance practices). I also encourage students to listen to experience performers, stressing their need to focus on details, and even open a critical discussion as to a performer's approach to his or her interpretation. For jazz musicians, I would teach them the blues and how to identify lead sheets, along with learning the three basic elements to learning jazz music: melody, rhythm, and harmony. That was in Baghdad, giving training courses to kids who were interested in playing with choirs.
