For beginning students, I tend to use the Faber Primer level course which includes a lesson book, theory book, performance book, and technique book. This set, along with supplemental material will provide your student with the backbone in music education they need to perform well in any direction they wish to take their private piano studies. For older beginning students, I enjoy using the Alfred adult piano series. My goal is to foster and encourage a lifelong love of music and a passion for communication. To me, that means training studentsin the styles of music that each individual feels the most connected to, and then extending their knowledge and awareness to styles that they may not have as much experience with. I believe that an in depth study of music is, in essence, the study of communication. However, I pair technical work with listening assignments, so that the students actually see the point of fundamental training. Hanon is the one book that has stayed with me for two decades and I adhere to its various training regimens very closely. For beginning students, I use Faber Methods. Once the student has progressed, I would introduce solo repertoire that supports the skills necessary for improvement. Usually, I ask students if they are DYING to learn a piece, and with that selection, I'll look for techniques that can be improved upon. For adults, I try to ask what they are interested in learning, and help gauge the technique into their learning. Because adults learn differently from children, it is key to help integrate a different method of learning. Read More

I normally use the Standard of Excellence method books for most of my students; however, I am open minded to adjusting to each individual student's musical needs, whether it be Jazz, Classical, or whatever style music the student is focusing on. For Drummers, I prefer the Haskell Harr Method, or the Buddy Rich Method Book, as well as the Breeze Easy Method Book.
