For beginner students who are children, I usually start with the Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has advanced to where I can see that they have a good grasp of the fundamentals of the instrument, that is typically when I begin to introduce solo repertoire and supplement with my own material. I have been teaching since age 15 (1999). In addition to extensive performing experience on clarinet, I have functioned as a piano accompanist, choir member, and praise band member through the years. As noted above, I teach clarinet, saxophone, flute, and piano. My methods vary according to each individual students' needs and goals, however I try to find the approach that will best help a student to appreciate music in general, sharpen the mind, and give each student a level of skill on their instrument that provides a sense of accomplishment. I am from a family of musicians and started my music lessons at a young age. I love playing the piano and have accompanied choirs, vocalists, bands, churches, etc. throughout my life. Other than the priceless enjoyment I have gotten out of being able to play the piano, my greatest pleasure has been teaching young and old how to play, appreciate and enjoy the piano instrument.
