It is important for me to expose the student, no matter the age, to not only written material, but chordal structure and basic harmony. For beginning students, I tend to use the Faber Primer level course which includes a lesson book, theory book, performance book, and technique book. This set, along with supplemental material will provide your student with the backbone in music education they need to perform well in any direction they wish to take their private piano studies. For older beginning students, I enjoy using the Alfred adult piano series. I normally use the Standard of Excellence method books for most of my students; however, I am open minded to adjusting to each individual student's musical needs, whether it be Jazz, Classical, or whatever style music the student is focusing on. For Drummers, I prefer the Haskell Harr Method, or the Buddy Rich Method Book, as well as the Breeze Easy Method Book.
