I usually use the Faber, Beyer, or Czerny depend on the student's level. I'd add Hanon, bach 2,3 part invention, Sonatina album, and the list can go on. For Jazz, all I need is manuscript paper and a Jazz Real Book (I'd hand out some exercise notes). For advanced students, I want them to listen to music a lot. I have a variety of books I use for beginning students, depending on age and level, including the Alfred guitar book for kids. Regardless of level, I always help students learn some music they are already interested in, as that is a key path to enjoying both the pure joy of music itself and the delight of learning something you didn't know you could do. And once student has progressed to have a skill, then I suggest some of easy solo repertoire appropriate or sometimes I made my own piece for them. For teenager and adults, I normally try to find out what they want to play and interested, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I'm fairly flexible, laid back in my teaching style, and always passionate about helping those who need it. Through our discovery of what music elicits a passionate response we will tailor our work towards building a foundation that best fits each student. Materials will vary widely based on the students needs.
