There are many different methods, practices, and philosophies that one can use when teaching drumming, and the most effective approach will depend on the individual student and their needs and goals. Here is a general overview of some approaches that I might use when teaching drumming: 1. Begin with the basics: Before diving into more complex rhythms and techniques, it's important to establish a solid foundation of basic drumming skills. This might include proper hand and foot technique, basic rhythms, and an understanding of the different parts of the drum set. 2. Read More

I make it a point to ask all students (or parents for my younger ones) to purchase a notepad where assignments, expectations, exercises, tips/tricks can be written down to help them progress during the year and into the following week of lessons. My favorite aspect about teaching is pushing students beyond the limit they place for themselves. That being said there must be a mutual understanding that I will do all I can to help students get over a "learning hump" as I call it- I have access to a plethora of journals, articles, teaching websites, a personal library, all of these materials can be scanned, printed out, emailed and whatnot for the benefit of my students. I have been teaching piano since I first graduated with a Bachelor's. Starting in my Hometown of Palo Alto, CA, I moved to New York in 2011, and have since been teaching a growing roster of students. The important part of the musical process, is learning how to be a self-teacher. I give students some methods to practice and encourage them to find the motivation within that allows the to keep with their studies. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More

My music pedagogy is influenced by Zoltan Kodaly, mile Jaques-Dalcroze, Edwin Gordon, and Carl Orff. For teaching violin, while I employ elements of the Suzuki Method, Strictly Strings, and Metodo Nicolo Violin to instill discipline and establish ,precision, I set up a lively, interdisciplinary, and creative environment by incorporating calisthenics, games, dancing, singing, and storytelling to encourage versatility and innovation. I try to be as flexible as possible, many things would depend on the student's age and background. I pay a lot of attention to movement when playing the instrument, I try to do this from the lesson one with an absolute beginner. For most beginning students who are children , I typically start with Alfred Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course Lesson Book A and voice I typically start with Adventures in singing.
