If teaching the 'cello, I like to use the instruction book that I learned from which is Samuel Applebaum's Beginning Strings book and around this I will introduce more international music, often in duet form to help with intonation. After the student develops good basic technique, then sonatas and concerti are gradually introduced. If teaching the piano, then I make sure that Dozen a Day for the beginners is incorporated with any of the beginning/intermediate books such as John Thompson's, Edna Mae Burnam's or Frances Clark's methods and for more advanced piano students the Hanon exercises are included along with the standard Classical repertoire. For beginning piano, I use the thompson and bastien books, along with basic theory books. As the student progresses, I introduce them to actual peices of vaying styles, as soon as they are ready. For saxophone and clarinet, I use multiple books, depending on the student's needs and goals and a host of my own materials and methods I have developed from years of teaching. Every single student learns differently and it's very important to adapt yourself to the specific student you're teaching. Personally, I'm a very logical person when it comes to singing, so being very specific and biological works with me the best. I have, however, noticed that many students learn better with imagery and visuals, where they're able to paint pictures in their heads of what the sound of their voice is supposed to be like and it clicks better with their brains. I graduated from Ithaca College School of Music with a BA in music composition and an instrumental emphasis on string bass and piano.
