I'm an enthusiastic, energetic, kind and dedicated music instructor. As passionate as I am about music, I am even more so about the students I teach. I graduated from the University of Connnecticut, Storrs, with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education in 1972, and a Master of Music degree, with a concentration in Piano Pedagogy in 1980. As an undergraduate my major instruments were piano and trombone. I was in the UConn Marching Band and had the great fortune to perform on my trombone in Europe during the 1970 Marching Band Tour. In voice, I let my students' goals guide their lessons. Whether it be stage performance, studio recording or personal satisfaction, I will use a variety of techniques to help them reach their individual goals. In violin and viola, I teach the Suzuki method combined with some contemporary and fun improvisation. I teach theory, but also how to communicate with musicians in general. My love for singing started when I was eight years old. I grew up singing in the Los Angeles Childrens Chorus which gave me much experience as a working musician starting at age eleven. I sang alongside notable alumnus Billie Eilish, as well as with Gustavo Dudamel, the LA Phil, and the LA Master Chorale. I am completing my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Massachusetts Amherst this year and plan to continue my studies of voice and vocal pedagogy in my graduate studies. When I finish teaching a lesson, I often feel like I've either learned something new or have been reminded of something fundamental about music. For example, it's very good for the health of my own piano technique to be able to explain basic piano technique to someone else. I think it's this "selfish" element of teaching that most characterizes my approach to private lessons--I try to treat every lesson as an opportunity for my personal growth as well as theirs, and I try to do this by communicating a genuine passion for music. I loved the direct connection to this very personal aspect of peoples' lives, and I felt humbled by the trust I was given.
