For beginning students, I like to focus for the first few weeks on playing scales and songs without written music, and I continue to incorporate learning by at any level. When I begin using written music I use the Accent on Achievement or Essential Elements method (I am also comfortable with other standard elementary methods and would be happy to use whatever method a student's band director is using), which is a good place to start whether or not the student already reads music. I have been performing since age 7 playing classical piano in recitals with my sister. I got my first guitar at the age of 12. At 15 I was playing around town with different bands. After years of playing in garage bands, I applied to Wayne State University and enrolled in their music department. I started teaching in high-school. I taught guitar and drums from ages 7 to 55, from the absolute beginner to someone rekindling an old habit. I had the opportunity to use the lessons I was learning in college while I was still in college. I not only was a tutor, but I had some students outside of school. This helped my skills as a teacher improve quickly.
