When starting off with students who are either children or complete beginners, I like to begin with Hal Leonard's All-In-One lessons book, while also incorporating individual sheet music to accentuate what the books are trying to teach. With adults, I take a quicker paced method by first establishing what direction in music they would like to go in, then introducing well-known songs of that genre into their repertoire. Encouraging them to share with their families what they are working is always a good way to assure that they'll have a good support system throughout, which normally gets them more motivated to improve. Making sure they are having a good time throughout our lesson and during their practice times is key. Each person is unique which transfers to a different learning technque for each student. I firmly believe in making sure each student learns at his or her own pace. If my student is having difficulty learning something new, I will ensure the student understands the lesson a different way i.e. singing a piece, clapping the rhythm, drawing pictures... etc. No matter the lesson, each student will have fun and exceed in accomplishing their goals. This is why I use a well-developed system of technical exercises that are easy to understand and implement that allows the student to quickly gain mastery of the instrument. I've been playing bass guitar and double bass, professionally for over 35 years in various bands, groups, orchestras and with international stars such as Ray Charles and Andrea Bocelli. I've played in locations such as Boston, New York, Pittsburgh, Maryland, New Jersey, and as far west as Chicago an Detriot.
