For beginners, I show them basic chords (Major, Minor and Diminished) if they're a guitarist and if they're a bassist, I teach them octaves and basic waking lines. Once they progress, I show them common scales and chord progressions used in modern music and focus on developing technique. If they're intermediate to advanced, I ask them what they feel they need work on and we focus on that. I defintely will not stay seated behind the piano for the entire lesson. I like to get up and get involved! I won't ask students to try anything that I won't demonstrate myself first, which I have found usually puts them at ease (this is especially true with children and teens.)
