I have 10,000+ hours of teaching experience, and have been an active professional orchestral clarinetist since 2008. I also play chamber music in various ensembles, and occasionally collaborate in world music settings such as flamenco and Latin music. My students get a solid classical foundation from me, which allows them to freely explore whatever musical style interests them. Most of my students participate in extra-curricular musical ensembles, and many of them go on to major in music in college. Read More

I started teaching privately as a student at Pacific Lutheran University. I taught a steady 4 students, while also doing coaching for the theater department when musical season came along. I have been sightreading music once before I could read English, and I am well-versed is several different sets of training booklets for piano. One of the only ways to learn music, is to have fun while doing it. I like to think my sense of humor can help dissolve tough lessons. Read More

For methods; it will honestly depend on if the student has been working through something with a prior lesson teacher or after the first lesson and seeing what the interest is in either jazz or classical will go from there. For classical; I would utilize the Rubank method books that I used when doing classical music. For jazz studies, I find it more beneficial to start with the Charlie Parker Omnibook, Realbook, then start learning things by ear and memory depending on the level of the student and the progress we are making. I want you to discover what's fun about music to you! Advanced players: more in depth talks, jamming together, and sharing ideas and philosophies. I have some excellent and sort of out of the box practice strategies that I learned from taking a few lessons with Julian Lage (which I hope to do more of, and pass along anything else that I learn). I am certainly not a theory master general, but if you want to talk about feel, improv, how emotion relates to music and look at things from a fresh perspective I think I could help out loads.
