I have the most experience teaching young students (about 7 years old) who have had no experience or instruction in music. In such a case, I start with the fundamentals of music (how to read music), theory, and keyboard skills. I am partial to Samuel Applebaum's methods: For young beginners, I like tto begin with the String Builder series; then, to improve upon understanding of key signatures, move on to Scales for Strings. Similarly, I'm also a fan of Suzuki, although I am not entirely limited to those two. And, of course recital and performance pieces are a must, preferably of the students's choosing - usually students already have something in mind that they want to learn! Read More
