I focus on the fundamentals.  When a student has a firm grasp on the fundamentals they can survive in any arena being a musician may place you in. Additionally I like to help my students discover their unique voice and how that uniqueness helps to add to a bands overall performance. Additionally, To me band is much more then just an extracurricular activity. It is an opportunity for me to touch the life of a child by allowing them to see the larger world through performances and trips. Read More

I believe that students excel in an encouraging and praise filled environment. I also believe that students should be taught how to practice so that they can excel. I tailor each lesson according to the students needs and do my best to instill in them a love for Music. I have taught for many music schools (both public and private).  I have also owned my owe school of arts, teaching all instruments, putting together young groups.  One group in particular called: "ARCTIC THUNDER" was a group of 14 children from 8 - 14 yrs old.  They performed at Walt Disney (Magic Music Days), and opened for many known recording artist.  You can see a video of them recording by searching for Kayla Arctic Thunder on Youtube. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. For young, beginning and novice students, I believe that it is important to find and instill a love of music before diving too deeply into the fundamentals. Music is a beautiful thing, but it can be overwhelmingly complex at the same time. I will only take on students who show a genuine interest in music, and from there I like to cultivate that interest.
