I was also offered the position of saxophone instructor at my high school's band camp for three consecutive Summers.  My philosophy is to ask why, investigate what interests the student to learn music in the first place. Nine times out of ten it is a short-lived pipe dream, when the realization of consistent practice, sacrifice, and hard work equals results is reality. I then utilize lessons plans or books that I have used, accordingly. I find its good practice to have some form of a guide or lesson plan, but also make sure they have the basic concept of music theory down in order for the journey to make sense. Read More

During my lessons, I like to create an environment free of judgment, embarrassment, inhibition, self-doubt, and any other emotion or thought, internal or external that is going to deter my students from becoming the best singers possible. Im always open to try different techniques and approaches in order to allow my students to open to me and to the music. I quickly learned how fulfilling the process was, and was routinely complimented on the patience I exhibited with my beginner students. After taking time off to work on my graduate degree and launch my freelance career, I resumed teaching again after graduation, volunteering as a faculty assistant with a music theory course at a local community college. For BEGINNING students, I teach piano but also theory as well. In order to play the piano accurately, the student must know theory. I teach using James Bastien's primary-level 4 books. Within those books, they offer a Piano book, Theory book, Performance book, and a Technic book. Depending on the child's level and ability to play, I will incorporate what I see is the best book to use for each individual student. Read More
