I, Michael G. Turner, breathe through music. My love for music began at a very early age and I was blessed to realize, very soon, that it was my passion.I began performing at the age of 13 on clarinet, in voice, and on drums and percussion. Most of my early performance experience was obtained in church, school, and in my older brothers' Top 40 band. I hold an Associates in Music degree from Los Angeles City College, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from California State University Northridge, a California State Teaching Credential, and I am currently the music teacher and director of bands at Chatsworth High School in Chatsworth California. Teaching is a journey of discovery, growth, and mutual inspiration. My approach is centered on creating an environment where learning becomes an exciting exploration rather than a mere instruction. I view myself as a guide, nurturing the innate curiosity and talents of my students while providing them with the tools and knowledge they need to flourish in their musical pursuits. My teaching approach is characterized by fostering a personalized connection with each student, nurturing their passion for music, and building a strong foundational understanding. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonards Essential Elements book, as well a basic understanding of music. Once the student has progressed to have a nice grasp of the fundamentals of music, I usually begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. I also believe in the importance of listening to as many professional recordings as possible of the instrument the student is taking lessons on. Read More

I am a relaxed teacher, and try to make that a key note in everyone's lesson. No one likes to learn with a headache! Each lesson will have exercises and songs catered for each student's wants, designed to help progress at a steady pace. I encourage having an achievable goal set for practices and let each of my student's accomplishments be recognized. Being involved with the music community, I am also aware of concerts my students can perform and just go watch if they wanted. Read More

I personally practice SOVT, where we start with light humming, use a semi-occluded means of vocalizing (such as lip trills or a straw in water) to gradually warm-up the vocal cords and bring the breath under the voice for adequate support. Then we move on to actual vocalizations. Over several lessons, we work on a chosen piece together and begin building repertoire appropriate to the singer. I have taught both children and adults beginner piano and singing basics. My own education and recent experiences as a professional have inspired me to take on more students. Music making is incredibly transformative for those who are bold enough to pursue it. Read More

I have developed my skill set through experience as a professional musician, songwriter, and band member. My specialty is guitar, as I have a degree in Guitar Performance from the California Institute of the Arts, and I also teach piano, voice, and ukulele. I also love to help students write music to express their creativity. As a musician, I have had the opportunity to perform, write, and record professionally with a very dedicated group of musicians. Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
