I have used a variety of books with my students, but generally start students with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. I use a mix of books (note reading), ear training, and musical games (depending on age) in lessons. I like to offer students a variety of learning styles, in order to find the one that best suits them. Over the past ten years, I have enjoyed working with hundreds of music students. In each private lesson, my goal is not simply to teach, but to make the entire experience enjoyable. With this in mind, I select works that will both challenge and inspire my students. I also incorporate theory review games and incentives to help motivate children and keep them excited about music. I tailor my coaching approach to my student's needs. If the focus is on exams and recitals, I use Berklee and Tring Syllabus. I do focus more on skills: developing the Voice (developing a belted voice, head voice, or whatever is needed) and Performance, unless Music theory is requested. I start my students with standard songs, classical, Broadway, (unless a specific genre is requested) but expose my students to different genres and help them find the strength and uniqueness of their own voice. I seek to protect and encourage these young singers. For older students around late high school, I am very comfortable guiding them through the college application process for music schools, having done so for several of my high school students last year. I put into lessons with adult students whatever they seek to gain from them. I will seek performance opportunities for my students, but I want to keep our lessons fun and comfortable, rather than pushing them to be in performance situations if they do not desire them.
