I have been teaching privately part time for the past 4 years working with students in grades K-12. My main goal in lessons is for my students to not only succeed at a new skill once, but to be confident in their ability to repeat their success in practice at home and at our next lessons. I encourage positive feedback and positive "self-talk" as a means of boosting self-efficacy. In order to enjoy playing our instruments for many years to come, I emphasize the importance of healthy technique in order to prevent injury. Through the process of learning scales and pieces, I make sure to incorporate a focus on correct posture, a relaxed left hand, and healthy bow arm so that playing the violin is a positive experience for each student. I use a wide range of materials depending on a student's interests and background - I often teach music reading to students who are reading for the first time, and for students who are already able to read music I modify our lesson materials to reflect this. I started off by giving friends mini lessons back in college. I then moved on to teaching privately out of a music school and realized from that point, that I really enjoy teaching and sharing my knowledge and passion with others. I find it rewarding and fulfilling to see my students get excited about learning music, my aim is to further grow their passion and thirst for musical knowledge. I believe no student will want to learn if they don't feel excited about the subject, this is why I find ways to package the somewhat dry and tedious parts of music into a more exciting and palatable chunks. For example, if a student wants to learn how to play blues piano, I'll assign him exercises to compliment learning that idiom, i.e. scales, chords and rhythm patterns. people learn best when they are interested in at that moment. I love the harp and enjoy sharing its beauty with students of all ages! I started playing when I was eight years old and haven't stopped since. I enjoy doing gigs such as weddings and parties, but I also love taking my harp to schools and teaching students about this wonderful instrument. Currently, I own three harps - a pedal harp, a lever harp, and a lap harp. I enjoy each of them and love playing a wide variety of music on them. Read More
