For my beginner students, who are younger, I start off with the Faber series in the Primer levels. After progressing through the first few levels of the series, I then start to introduce solo repertoire depending on the interests of the student. For my older students, we also go through the Faber Adult Piano Adventures book, where we learn the basics of piano along with some fun pieces. For children, I draw influence from the organization of the Suzuki method, while still maintaining the emphasis on fun. (Learning TV theme songs, etc) Fundamentals are introduced with memorable examples tailored to the students musical interests. For all other levels of experience, I encourage the student to share with me what exactly it is that they want to learn or need help with. If the student has no idea, I will take over and decide what is missing from the students repetoire, and find the most effective way of tackling these new skills while maintaining fun. I have been teaching in some capacity since college. I have directed a high-school praise team and taught guitar, piano, and recorder in a corrections institute. One of my earliest students was a former band-mate. One of the early lessons is the importance of practice. He saw for the first time my work ethic and commitment to daily practice. What I learned from the experience is the importance of demonstrating good music study habits and encouraging the students interest in music so that they can continue to grow and enjoy the guitar.
