Keenly interested in music, I embarked on my lifelong love of the violin at age seven when I began violin studies with Leon Asa. After emigrating to the United States in 1958, I continued my early violin studies with the late Emily Cleve Gregerson of Omaha, Nebraska. In 1967, while an undergraduate at the University of Chicago, I was accepted as an advanced violin student by Elliot Golub, who was at the time a member of the Contemporary Chamber Players at the University of Chicago under Ralph Shapey, and a founder of the acclaimed Music of the Baroque series in Chicago. I like to write out lessons, but I generally start my students off using Benny Greb's "The Language of Drumming." If students fall in love with a piece well beyond their current capability, I don't usually say no; instead, I help them master the challenges step by step. I require students to learn scales; however, I avoid most technical method books. Instead, I invent exercises based on the challenges of a particular piece. Read More
