I have been playing the clarinet since 2007, and have been involved in teaching since 2016. I graduated from Southern Methodist University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, and am currently pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Chamber Music Performance at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee. I will work invariably though with all students in building a solid vocal technique based on singing with the air flow and always promoting a healthy tone quality. My approach is definitely supportive and positive, but I don't let that get in the way of challenging the student. I am not afraid to tell the student that they can do better. It's very important to get to know the student's goals and inspirations. That way, I can focus on the skills they need. I encourage all my students to take charge of their lessons by asking them to develop questions throughout the week, prioritize what music we focus on, and tune into their own weaknesses and strengths. While I will guide them along the way, I want my students to gain the confidence to make decisions for themselves. I start each student with a diagnostic lesson where I assess the strong points of their playing, and I also identify the areas that could use work. After that initial lesson I formulate a customized curriculum that is aimed at improving the technical, musical, and theoretical aspects of the student to create a well-rounded musician. I believe that incorporating solo repertoire into lessons is important as well.
