As an adult, I have taken pedagogy with the head of the pedagogy department at Olivet Nazarene University, Piano from Dr. Karen Ball, flute from Gary Schocker, and voice lessons from members of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. I individualize my teaching methods for each student based on their ability level. After I assess the ability level, I find level-appropriate method books, scale studies, etudes, tone exercises, sight reading, and solo repertoire. I use method books that I am personally familiar with and like, but am open to looking for new, exciting options. I make sure that the students feels comfortable with materials, but is also challanged so that they may progress in their skills. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I would like to start with Hal Leonard's All-In-One Piano Lessons or Alfred's Premier Piano Course. For adults, the Hal Leonard's Adult Piano Method is a good book to start with. For intermediate and advanced students, I will figure out the appropriate method books for them at the first time we meet. I like to encourage my students, help and motivate them enjoy the lesson. I like to see where each student's natural talents and personal desires are headed and act as a servant leader to get them there. Students are encouraged to pursue music in the way that will keep them engaged reaping maximum benefits whether that be to build parts of their brain that would have otherwise lie dormant, or become the best solo performer they can be. Acknowledging and celebrating even the smallest wins is what brings the most joy in my tutoring sessions. Read More

My method is to build a solid repertoire list in whatever style of music the student prefers, and then work to a clear understanding of the characteristics necessary to sing in that style. I love having conversation with students to get to know them and find ways the music can relate to them. It also helps me make my teaching more relatable to them. I try to give all my students at least one piece of classical music to broaden their horizons and also to use the techniques they are learning in a different way. Read More
