My teaching style combines different elements. I try to keep it fresh and work on music that the student enjoys. I will work on songs but also larger concepts including ear training, improvisation, reading, and chord knowledge/ theory. I don't try to force concepts on people, but introduce them if they are open/amenable to it. More recently I have had the pleasure of conducting several masterclasses in China, where I was made an honourary professor, University of Toronto and Gordon College in Massachusetts. It is important to know about your instrument to be able to properly use it. My students will not only begin with the basic fundamentals of singing, breathing techniques, and music theory; but they will also learn the anatomy of the voice and how the body allows the sound to be produced. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress and makes students eager to learn more. I create and tailor my lesson plans and course to each student. In general we balance working on technique, tone, repertoire (songs) and improvising/composing. I always pick music to study that the student is interested in as well as classic pieces that are timeless relics in the music world. For young beginners I typically with Suzuki Book 1 or the Abracadabra Flute Book.  For children preparing for NYSMA I use the Rubank method with supplements from Forty Little Pieces and gradually move on to more solo repertoire.  For adult students I make repertoire selections based on students' interests while taking care to keep lessons both engaging and fun no matter their starting level.  Although my training is primarily classical, I am happy to incorporate music from other genres into lessons.
