Corey has taught and directed music and theatre for youth for over 15 years. Corey was born and raised in southern Oregon where he spent his youth performing live music and theatre on stages like the Ross Ragland Theatre, The Linkville Playhouse, Oregon Stage Works, and Oregon Shakespeare Festival. He has been playing the guitar and drums, as well as acting and directing, since he was 12 years old. I have been teaching beginning piano to younger students and flute to students of all ages! I have also had the opportunity to teach overseas when my university's wind ensemble went on tour to Asia. My experience is mostly with classical music, but I have some experience in jazz. Not too much though! I love to encourage a consistent practice schedule and I emphasize having fun while practicing. I feel that, like my piano teachers always said, practice does in fact make perfet. It's amazing what can happen with even a 1/2 hour every other day when it comes to weekly lessons. I tend to assign more, but my point is that it's extremely important to practice! Also, what helped students the most - across the board - was theory workbooks, especially when it came to composition. Getting students interested in composing lends way to their completion rate when it came to homework too! Read More

I like each student to have about 3-5 songs at a time to work on in lessons. It is important to me that the student has a variety of songs to work on so that they do not get burnt out or bored. If a student has a particular goal or song they would like to work on, then I would of course alter any lesson to focus on the need of the student. Read More

I use method books by Hal Leonard and Bryan Johanson to begin with, along with exercises from pumping nylon. Once we get to a point where we can read fairly fluently, we begin repertoire work from Canada's Royal Conservatory. I also use chord charts to begin learning how to play as well, as most students like to learn chords to play pop or folk tunes in the meantime as they're learning the fundamentals. Read More
