I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Miami University in 2018 with a Bachelors of Music degree in Vocal Performance and a minor in Musical Theatre. I have had the chance to perform around the country in various ensembles, and attended the American Institute for Musical Studies in Graz, Austria studying in their Lieder Studio. At Miami, I performed in five operas, and performed in chamber and jazz ensembles. For beginning children, I typically like to use the Alfred series of beginner books depending on the instrument. I also like the students to rely on their ears just as equally, so the other half of the lesson is usually dedicated to learning music without relying on reading music. Of course, this is all dependent on the student's needs or prior experience. Yes for teaching piano I use Nancy and Randall Faber's books. I have used all of them. For guitar and mandolin I generally do not use a "book". As the lessons progress I might introduce a book if that is what is called for. All orchestral instruments call for the structure of a book and I augment that with my own explanations. I will work with each student to help them understand the fundamentals of jazz, for example, knowing major scales, minor scales, and all of the modes that we typically see in most jazz repertoire. For students that are more advanced we will work on learning how to play over common chord progressions and learn how to play songs found in the Great American Songbook.
