To me it is very important to balance the technical and creative aspects of development. No matter what age/skill level I split time during lessons into activities that develop technique and language, and compositional, creative activities that help each student explore their instrument and what they have to say with it. This balance can be altered depending on the interests of the student or parent. I start beginners off with Frances Clark, The Music Tree Series. I also use the Faber-Faber Piano Adventures and Helen Marlais' Succeeding at the Piano. As students progress, I focus on repertoire pieces issuing from the baroque, classical, romantic, and modern eras as to introduce students to the history of music. For very young beginning students, I typically start with Faber Piano Adventures, and for older beginners, the Faber Accelerated Piano Adventures or Hal Leonard Adult Learner Series. Once the student has shown an understanding of basic theory and technique, classical repertoire will be introduced, along with level appropriate arrangements of the student's choice music. It's important that the student is taught how to practice a piece effectively to continue growing musically in between lessons, so that lessons can be used to find areas for improvement, and to learn new concepts and material. I use the Faber method for my beginner students. Sometimes with students who are 4 or 5 years I use the pre-beginners books from Alfred. Other times I use the Suzuki method, depending on the level of understanding. Alongside those books, I use technique books to build good, strong hand especially for young kids. As we move along I start giving solo repertoire from different eras of music to introduce the student to different kinds of music from different composers. Read More

My style is to review a previous lesson with playing a "homework" etude or study and early on have the student pay close attention to dynamics. I like to encourage younger students and challenge the more advanced students to think in terms of musical interpretations based on what the composer is trying to convey. Read More

I am a musician who wants to share and instill the love and passion of music. I have experience working with members of bands such as Halestorm, the Gene Simmons band, Alice Cooper, Beasto Blanco, Sponge, and more, as well as Broadway stars such as Sutton Foster and Laura Bell Bundy. I take these experiences as well as my extensive training (BM Belmont University) and performance history (Red Light Angels, Anne Frankenstein) to help not only teach my students to sing but to give them the tools to succeed.
