My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching at a music summer camp 3 years ago. Since then, I have been teaching private students. I encourage regular practice sessions. This is one of the key points I like to emphasize for beginners especially, as it tends to help the student progress, gain a passion for the instrument, and build discipline. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy music, motivate them to practice and continue to learn. Read More
Instruments: Piano
My philosophy is if it isn't fun; nobody wants to do it. My method of teaching provides simple psycology in making praticing fun. The piano needs to be praticed every day if the student wants to progress! For Children I teach pop and classical piano, where as adults I try to find out why they want to play and what style of music they would like to play. Many adults don't desire to be a concert pianist but, If you'd like to play for fun; maybe play at a party to entertain your guests and you would like to play popular music; there's a class specialized for that. After finishing college and meeting so many artists seeking help I founded The Gene Townsel Studio of Theatrical and Musical Arts where such artists as "Scat Man" Crothers and Marques Houston of "Immature" now "IMX" were regular clients. As a vocal coach/teacher to professional and aspiring artists for over 40 years, I have used my experience as an Internationally Acclaimed Singer and his formal training (Florida AM University) as a vocal music major, to help my students develop the tools necessary to be competitive in the industry. I pride myself on my ability to teach not only the standard method book sequences of etudes and exercises for the various instruments, but a curriculum that integrates improvisation and composition at all levels of age and ability. I believe in the importance of personalizing the music-making process and building student confidence in their own abilities to creatively express themselves. I encourage students to write songs, improvise based on given materials, and most importantly, have fun while doing it! Read More
Instruments: Piano Keyboard
My experience goes back over ten years. I have taught students privately and also from teaching services. Presently, I am teaching piano at a school here in the Miami area. In additionn to that, I have several private students that I teach at my home studio. My students are encouraged to practice everyday. If they are taking lessons because they are interested, it is easier to teach them. If they are coming because their parents want to learn, they are not as inclined to enjoy their lessons. Read More
Instruments: Violin Cello Viola Mandolin Electric Violin Fiddle Double Bass
For beginning students in any genre, I begin with learning songs. Classical, jazz, bluegrass, and rock are more easily understood when you spend time playing the music with someone else. Repertoire is chosen with the understanding that fundamentals are key to life long participation and students find positive success when they are able to then share a completed work with their friends and family (think holiday get-togethers!) For young intermediate to advanced players, the philosophy of building one's repertoire continues with the added focus on musical understanding. Read More
Instruments: Saxophone
I also incorporate a variety of teaching strategies to keep students engaged and motivated. These include listening activities, call-and-response exercises, rhythmic movement, and guided practice during lessons. I encourage students to think critically about the music they are learning by asking questions about phrasing, dynamics, and musical style. This helps them become more independent musicians and active participants in their own learning. Another important part of my teaching philosophy is helping students develop consistent practice habits. Read More
