My philosophy is if it isn't fun; nobody wants to do it. My method of teaching provides simple psycology in making praticing fun. The piano needs to be praticed every day if the student wants to progress! For Children I teach pop and classical piano, where as adults I try to find out why they want to play and what style of music they would like to play. Many adults don't desire to be a concert pianist but, If you'd like to play for fun; maybe play at a party to entertain your guests and you would like to play popular music; there's a class specialized for that. My experience goes back over ten years.  I have taught students privately and also from teaching services.  Presently, I am teaching piano at a school here in the Miami area.  In additionn to that, I have several private students that I teach at my home studio.  My students are encouraged to practice everyday.  If they are taking lessons because they are interested, it is easier to teach them.  If they are coming because their parents want to learn, they are not as inclined to enjoy their lessons. For beginning students in any genre, I begin with learning songs. Classical, jazz, bluegrass, and rock are more easily understood when you spend time playing the music with someone else. Repertoire is chosen with the understanding that fundamentals are key to life long participation and students find positive success when they are able to then share a completed work with their friends and family (think holiday get-togethers!)
