When I teach, I like to make sure my students feel welcome and encouraged. I will always praise them when they make improvements, no matter how small, but I will still make sure they know what it is they have to work on without reprimanding them. I try to keep my students inspired by asking them what they want to work on. For example, with a high school student, we worked on a duet that she composed for two flutes. Read More

For young beginning students (usually ages 5-7) I would begin with the Hal Leonard Piano Lessons Book series. After I feel that the student can properly read music and understand fundamentals of the piano I will begin to incorporate other methods such as Piano Adventures and the Bastien series. When the student gets older they will begin learning solo repertoire that is deemed appropriate as well as scales and other rudimentary exercises. Read More

I started teaching about 3 years ago, and have been consistently going to various students' homes for lessons, voice and violin alike. I have worked with all ages, from 5 years old to over 60 years old. Making sure my students constantly practice is definitely one of my key points I focus on. Depending upon what area/instrument of music I'm teaching, I use a number of different materials, including (but not limited to) Tonal Harmony (Kostka, et al.), Essential Dictionary of Music Notation, Accent on Achievement, Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, or Rock House Method (McCarthy). The skill level of the student also dictates what resources I'll use. I have acquired over 15 years experience in teaching all different genres of music through piano, violin, and viola to students of all ages, as well as many years of experience in preparing students for NYSSMA in all levels.
