My favorite thing about teaching is that no two students are the same; and no two lessons with the same student are either! It is so important to establish a goal for a student to work towards, so that they know what they're practicing for. Not huge goals either that are months away, but goals that can be accomplished between each lesson. The best part of the job is seeing students get excited for music, and being able to grow in such a way that they're able to put their personality into their performances. Read More

I have performed with orchestral, Church, Jazz, Band and Chamber Music ensembles in Cleveland Ohio and Detroit,MI. I studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music with Linda Muhlert(Frumker). I also had some lessons with Myron Bloom of the Cleveland Orchestra. In the Southfield Symphony Orchestra, I performed next to Bryan Kennedy of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra as 2nd horn on the Maurice Ravel Mother Goose Suite. I performed in a horn quartet with James McHard,AliceMchard and Frank Hussey. Read More

While I'm very new at teaching music, I have many years of experience in teaching in general. I've been pretty successful as a private math tutor since 2009, and more recently I've also been tutoring in ACT prep, SAT, prep, and C++. I'm very glad to be transitioning to music, since that is a topic I'm very passionate about. I love so many things about teaching, and I can't wait to see how they transfer to music lessons. I firmly believe that students are best served when their teacher knows and cares about them. This attitude toward teaching helps me to tailor instruction to students' needs rather than following a prescriptive method. I usually begin lessons with a brief, informal conversation where we discuss the student's week and talk about things that are important to them. A strong and appropriate student-teacher relationship is the bedrock for successful goal-setting, accountability, and, of course, fun in private lessons! Read More

I believe that in order to effectively teach, one must also do. My extensive performance background allows me to read a student to see what their goals might be and custom fit a curriculum around them. Sometimes a method book is the right way to go. Books such as the Alfred series and Hal Leonard often offer easily attainable goals for younger students. However, it is always important to listen to one's students to find out what music makes them passionate and make sure to weave that into the practice of good technique, and theory. Read More

Keeping my students positive and inspired is my goal when teaching, and nothing is more inspiring than hitting landmarks and seeing your own progress! I encourage my students to learn at their own pace, and remind them that learning a skill is not a one size fits all scenario. I encourage my students to be as experimental, open minded and curious as possible. Setting realistic goals is always how I end every lesson, as you should always have a goal you're working to achieve. Read More
