My teaching experience started in high school when I started teaching younger middle school students. During college I would also give lessons to beginners and then taught in studios. My extensive performing experience around the world has given me a well rounded education of music that I love to share with my students! If you want to learn rock songs, let's rock! If you want to jam to salsa records, let's salsa! Read More

My Philosophy is "learn how the student best learns". Expose all the students to note reading, ear training, youtube, music theory, improvisation techniques, composition, fingerstyle patterns, tablature, and singing, and then create a program that maximizes their potential and their long term feeling that music is fun and worth doing. I am a dedicated musician and teacher beginning my fifth year in Portland. My background is multi-disciplinary: on top of my musical coursework I hold degrees in poetry and language. I am a songwriter as well as an instrumentalist and composer. I believe creativity and originality are very valuable parts of musical expression that sometimes get overlooked! I have more than three years experience playing in local bands, and I am well-versed in the Portland music scene (though I continue to add to my knowledge!) Read More

Whether the student desires to learn classical or contemporary styles of music, goals will be met through the traditional, one-on-one teaching style. Students can also expect me to be friendly, prepared, and motivated to have a great lesson every time, and I expect the same from my students! I encourage them to find joy in what they do, to take pride in their skill and strive to develop and strong sense of ownership in their art from which flows a stronger sense of individuality and personal confidence. I have always enjoyed helping students play better. My private teaching career began in 1978 and continues to the present. It is always more fun for the student it they understand why something is important and what the long term benefits are for them. No question is questioned. We enjoy exploring the Language of Music and the requirements of their instrument. Additionally, I have developed a method for addressing Performance Anxiety that has proven effective in any performance situation. Read More

I generally split lessons into three sections, 1/3 with chords, 1/3 scales, 1/3 with songs, but every student is different, for example, If your goal is to strictly learn chords to sing folks songs over, I will emphasize more chord reading and learning time. If you want to play leads, I will spend more time emphasizing scales to help you learn how to improvise. There are also other excercises we can do like rhythm reading (just with clapping, no instrument) transcription/listening, and harmonic analysis. Read More

Kathleen's teaching style seeks to draw out what is most interesting to students and build from there. Drawing from the Suzuki, Galamian, and Flesch methods, she encourages students to follow their interests to learn how it all fits together. She feels that the joy of learning music is contagious and looks for ways to get students plugged into local performing groups as well as helping the whole family find ways to play together.
