Master Degree: Western Oregon University , Bachelor Degree: Berklee College of Music
I love teaching! I work hard for my students and we have a lot of fun! I have taught music since 2011 after I graduated from Berklee College of Music with a bachelor's in professional music/music ed. I also graduated with a masters of vocal performance in 2023 from Western Oregon University. Both schools focused on popular music and jazz but I am familiar with light classical repertoire and music theater. I have had many students in the portland OR area but now I'm opening my online studio on Thursdays.
My teaching experience began in 2008 when I started tutoring and assisting a choir director at a school in Boston, MA. I worked there throughout my schooling and transitioned to private lessons after graduating in 2011. I also started a program called Sing Play Rise which offered free private tuition for students who joined the choir. I then moved back home to be with family and have been teaching in the PDX area at various schools since then. I have been with Arts Academy and Youth Music Project for three years.
Overall my work is focused on discovering music with the students and facing hurdles as we go. For voice I often let the student dictate the repertoire and support them with good technical basis. My students love a variety of singing, soft jazzy or loud and belty. For piano i prefer to use the Faber methods. I have been teaching students up to level 3. For guitar I can use hal leonard or Alfreds but the Alfreds seems to move faster. I also supplement with tab songs. I play fingerstyle but also with a pick
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs.. I also feel its important to keep learning.
