I enjoy teaching private lessons and helping students discover their niche and their full potential. I graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Music Education degree (magna cum laude). I've performed as lead/solo trumpet with the Blue Lake International Jazz Orchestra on their month-long tour of Europe in 2010. I have performed with the Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra and the Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra and many smaller ensembles. I'm currently pursuing my Master of Music in trumpet performance at Temple University and am studying with David Bilger, principal trumpet of The Philadelphia Orchestra. Read More

Once I feel the student has a solid understanding of these fundamentals, I move onto introducing them to repertoire that I think would help in putting these newly learned fundamentals into use as well as allowing them to expand their knowledge on other important factors of singing such as diction, pronunciation, phrasing, keeping a legato line, and possibly language skills depending on the piece. Over time I may even have them bring in pieces they may be interested in and work with them on understanding how they can incorporate these fundamentals and newly learned skills into the music that they love. What you need to most of all is practice your scales, and anything we went over previously. I will ask you to bring in a piece you like, a song perhaps. My goal will be to teach the student how to practice independently. I recommend setting up a practice schedule so that they know when they are supposed to practice. If the student is struggling with any of the weekly assignments, that is ok! Simply let me know at the next lesson so I know right where to help. No need to stress or worry if there is some confusion. Learning music is similar to learning another language; those first lessons, especially with drums, will have some basic learning curves, but I am sure that with practice & time you or your child will be excellent! The first two things that I teach in my studio is posture and breathing. I analyze the posture of the singer and find several yoga postures that can help the student to relax some tension and to be more comfortable. I help students to be more aware of how the breath works in their bodies by using several repeating breath exercises and yoga posture. My vocal technique is based on YogaVoice, meaning that I used Yoga principles combined with Vocal Technique exeecises to sing more organic and to achieve an authentic relaxed voice. Read More

My new students typically spend their first lesson and sometime their second getting used to playing the trumpet for the first time; the goal is to learn proper breathing, posture and tone. I have found the best method book for students is the "Learn to Play the Trumpet/Cornet" method book and always ask that students purchase the Arban's Method book, a must have for any trumpet player. Once the student is proficient in beginning methods, I like to move on to technical studies and the Sigmund Hering Etudes, as well as studies in the Arban's Method; if the student has progressed well enough Concertos and solo performance music will be added. For beginner students, I often begin with the foundations of the instrument. For drums, we would be practice the rhythmic subdivisions (quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes) and slowly work them into grooves that they can easily start to pick out of their favorite songs. When the fundamentals have been established, we can learn more advanced grooves, dissect songs together, and learn how to improvise and write our own drum parts.
