I like to teach without books as much as possible as I feel it allows the student to internalize musical concepts better. The book series I use however is the Rubank method books. These have easy fundamental exercises to help keep the chops in shape and to work on reading music. No two students are the same! Firstly, I like to ask the students what the end goal is with their respective instrument. I don't rely on lesson plans, I observe the student as they run through exercises, and I develop each lesson based on areas that they need improvement in. My beginners generally start with the "All For Strings" series to obtain the basic elements of violin playing. This curriculum provides students with virtually every phase of beginning through intermediate string study. I introduce solo repertoire that matches the musical interest of each student. I also guide my intermediate students through study of their current Middle School or High School orchestral repertoire. With adults, I endeavor to combine their tastes and interests with musical literature that is fun and sustains interest such as Mazas and Viotti duets. Read More

For young children (ages 4-10), I focus primarily on building a foundation in rhythm, pitch matching, and vocal warm ups (wolf howls, lip trills, tongue trills, etc.). I also encourage young children to bring in songs they enjoy singing, and use those songs to help build their understanding of musical structure. For slightly more experienced children (those who already can read music) I teach using the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) guidelines. Read More
