Instruments: Saxophone
A beautiful sound is the beginning of the creation of beautiful music! I find it most important to do work on a student's sound in the beginning stages of playing. To achieve the foundations of a good sound, playing pitches (beginning with A on alto) on the mouthpiece alone will develop the student's sound from the beginning as well as lay the foundations for a good embouchure. Doing this brings awareness to the students use of air by showing him/her the muscules used within and around the oral cavity in order to produce an optimal sound on the saxophone without developing bad habits that could be detrimental to a student's health. It is important to be musically ambidextrous: chances are, in your band's rehearsal, your other musicians will share ideas using tabs, not traditional notation. You can be the best note-reader on planet Earth, but if you cannot communicate a language others use, you find yourself stuck. I always incorporate music that my student likes to listen to, and frequently request Spotify or iTunes playlists for reference. I try to adapt pop songs into my curriculum (from their playlists) to teach chord theory and songwriting structure, and encourage students to write their own music. Read More
Instruments: Drums
I like to create lessons geared towards each individual students needs. I work out of a few different books depending upon skill level. I try to gear the lessons towards the style of music the student likes while also teaching different techniques for a wide variety of music. I like to use rudiments and stick control as warm up exercises and then also teach different grooves and rhythms through song. for beginner students I will teach drum kit basics like setup. tuning and how to replace drum heads etc as well. Since I strongly believe each person has his own learning style, I cater each lesson to him personally. I customize each lesson according to my student and the pace appropriate for him. Typically one of my pre-college student's lesson bags will include the following material: a lesson book, theory book, technique book, 1 or 2 supplementary repertoire books, notebook, flashcards, and handouts, which include sight-reading, lead sheets, progress charts, memos, etc. Not every item will be used each lesson, but certainly each month. I am a flutist, improviser, and composer with a bachelors degree in Jazz Flute Performance from the New England Conservatory of music. As a past member of the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra and a Bruce Montgomery Foundation Springboard Grant winner, I am experienced in classical competitions at the middle/high school level. At NEC, I worked in both the jazz and classical department, studying with great musicians such as Renee Krimsier, Jerry Bergonzi, Frank Carlberg, Joe Morris, and Jason Moran. Read More

My teaching style is very transparent; I want my students to recognize what we are working towards and how close they realistically are to that goal. This way, the student and I are working together to achieve a greater understanding of their instrument! I love feeling like I'm helping a student gain an understanding of a topic, rather than simply dictating a list of rules to know. I myself have an appreciation for many different styles of music, so I do my best to help students understand stylistically what is appropriate, necessary, and customary about the repertoire they are performing.
