For young children, I usually choose teaching books that are more fun and give them a basic start with understanding musical symbols by performing tasks in their books. Once students begin to understand how to read and play, I start to introduce the next level of material for them. For adults, I focus on what they are interested in and give more in-depth theory or compositional discussions if they wish or guide them towards playing pieces they always wanted to learn. Read More

I really just want people to enjoy what their doing. I definitely have some skills to efficiently practice, because I dont think anyone wants to waste time. The best thing is when my students are invested in their own progress, because I can help provide the needed skills to grow at different paces. I am a bit more relaxed with students that just want to have a positive musical experience, but I also can be very specific with students that wish to go on and study or perform music professionally. My teaching experience dates back to my first year in Yamatai. As a more advanced percussionist, I took it upon myself to assist my fellow new recruits with learning the material outside of regular practice times with the Musical Director. With percussion, we found that taking a piece and breaking it into small sections that were easily repeatable gave the best results. I took these techniques over to the drum set when the time came, and found ways to make simple drum rhythms more interesting and engaging. Read More

I learned very early on in my teaching experience that every student is different, and the lesson should be personalized to fit their needs. For true beginners, the basics are always established, and are frequently reminded; how to hold the drumstick, how to get the correct motion when striking the drum, and proper playing zones. Stick Control, Alfred's Beginning Drum Set Book, and The All American Drummer are three versatile books that my students will be exposed to, no matter what level of player they are. Read More

I believe that there is no "cookie-cutter" way to teach music. It is a very creative art-form which calls for room for creativity. My teaching experience dates back to the early 2000s, I began teaching private lessons part time. In 2009, I began teaching for a local performing arts school full-time. Among the accomplishments of my prior students, I have 3 who have graduated and attended Berkeley School of Music in Boston, 1 graduated from New York Film Academy and is working off Broadway, 1 who graduated from Pace University then went on to perform on Broadway and now is performing along side Rod Stewart, I have 2 who are now teaching music, and a number of others who are in college, have graduated, or are recording, writing and/or performing nationally and internationally. While teaching to read music is at the core of my approach, I also encourage my students to improvise, play popular songs by ear, and follow chord charts. I regularly offer student recitals, providing an opportunity for a group experience, peer feedback, and growth in self-confidence at the instrument. My lessons are fun, and I like to mix things up by giving my students both serious and fun pieces to work on. Read More

I'm a NY certified music educator and I absolutely love teaching music. I graduated in 2018 from Houghton College with a degree in music education. Last year I taught middle school orchestra and general music at a public school outside of Syracuse. I taught private viola and cello lessons during college to other music education majors, and this year I have a studio in Owego.
